Artist: Madd Paddy
CD Title: Arrived
Sounds Like:
Review: "The Auld New Windsor" by Madd Paddy is a song any Pogues fan would love, as it's easy to imagine Shane MacGowan singing it. It also has a natural, acoustic instrumental arrangement, but the vocal is as boisterous as happy hour at your local pub, and listening to it just may make you want to order a pint or two. The Pogues kicked the door down for rockers to get their Irish out. Now Madd Paddy is storming through that door. Be smart and remember to play it at your next St. Patricks Day party.

Artist: The Decemberists
CD Title: The Crane Wife
Sounds Like: Neutral Milk Hotel, Page France, Beruit
Review: The Decemberists latest album builds on everything they did in the past, yet takes it in a completely different direction. The album bleeds of uniqueness and freshness. A strong recommend. Serious.

CD Title: The Bens

Review: This is a 4 song ep put out by Ben Folds, Ben Kweller, and Ben Lee, and it is amazing. Vocals are shared on each song. I recommend checking them out.

Artist: Dashboard Confessional
CD Title: Dusk and Summer
Sounds Like:
Review: I gotta admit, I'm a huge Dashboard fan. The latest album builds upon the strong foundation that Dashboard Confessional had constructed, and really shows a significant amount of maturation. Check out "Don't Wait".

Artist: The Envy Corps
CD Title: Will Write You Love Letters If You Tell Me To (ep)
Sounds Like:
Review: The Envy Corps are a band out of the bustling college town of Ames, IA. Their latest ep release has been long awaited, and " Will Write You Love Letters If You Tell Me To" does not disappoint. The Envy Corps resemble a Radiohead on uppers, which is by no means a bad thing. The catchy tune "Rhinemaidens", which caught a lot of airplay on the local stations in Iowa is an optimistic song, and tends to drill itself into your head. Another great track is "Sylvia Plath". The whole album is incredible, and is definitely worth a listen.

Artist: Arctic Monkeys
CD Title: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Sounds Like:
Review: This recent Arctic Monkeys release is quite possibly one of the best albums I've heard in a while. They're intensity is on par with the short-lived phenomenon The Vines, and there's some tastes of The Walkmen in there too. I recommend "Dancing Shoes".

Artist: We Are Scientists
CD Title: With Love and Squalor
Sounds Like:
Review: This whole album is a joyous explosion of uptempo ear candy for alt-hipsters and scenetellectuals alike. They are scientists? I doubt it, but that name will immediately appeal to their target audience of witty, fashionable kids looking for a reason not to sit still. The group sounds a lot like an American Bloc Party, at times bringing up flashes of Hot Hot Heat or the Strokes. All in all, this album has the wit and credibility to enrapture the indie crowd, as well as the indisputable goodness and catchiness to appeal to any 16-to-30-year-old radio zombie. Put them on the air, and we'll have lost another good band to the masses.

Go buy/acquire this album.

Artist: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
CD Title: Self-Titled
Sounds Like:
Review: Starting with an almost Beatlesesque "Yellow Submarine" track, I wasn't quite sure this would be an Album I would enjoy. I had heard good good things about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and decided to see what all of the fuss was about. I was not disappointed. As unique as Colin Meloy in vocal quality, CYHSY is one of those groups that grows on you the more you listen. A solid album, they have a similar flavor to Wolf Parade. Check out the title track "Clap Your Hands!".

Artist: The Thermals
CD Title: More Parts Per Million
Sounds Like:
Review: The Thermals are a breath of fresh, fast, DIY-alt-punk air. While clearly punk in sound, it's more vintage sweater than mohawk and safety pins. It sounds raw -- like it was recorded in a couple quick takes in someone's basement, and it's driving, and it is definitely fun to listen to. I prefer this album to their follow-up, "Fuckin A." Look for the tracks "No Culture Icons" and "Brace and Brake" first.

Artist: Nightmare of You
CD Title: Nightmare of You
Sounds Like:
Review: From their name, you'd expect this band to sound like one of the many semi-goth screemo teen angst outfits around these days, but -- oh ho! you'd be wrong. They do stink a little bit of that good old dark teen melancholy, but they do it with bouncing, alt-emo melodies. The two clear gems of the album, "Why am I Always Right?" and "Ode to Serotonin," are reason enough to leave the album near the top of your rotation for a couple weeks. The rest of the album, while a clear step down, shows plenty of promise to grow on you. The clever lyrics, catchy melodies, and great vocal quality of the lead singer make Nightmare of You a worthwhile listen.

Artist: Action Action
CD Title: An Army of Shapes Between Wars
Sounds Like:
Review: The sophomore release by Action Action. The band doesn't seem to stray to far from their self-title debut album, but nontheless, I'm a fan. Action Action might be considered the lovechild of The Faint and Scissor Sisters. I'd like to think so.

CD Title: Come on, Feel it
Sounds Like:
Review: I saw this as I was browsing the new release wall at Hastings. Well, I gave it a shot, and was not disappointed. A cd that is listenable from start to finish. I recommend checking out "Do the Choo Choo" and "Come on, feel it".

Artist: Motion City Soundtrack
CD Title: Commit This To Memory
Sounds Like:
Review: This album has quickly become one of my favorites of all time. MCS blends great guitar and keyboard sounds with an extremely tight rhythm section. The drums on this record are amazing. Mark Hoppus, of Blink 182 fame, produced this amazing follow-up to their first release "I Am The Movie," and he did not disappoint.

Artist: Jason Mraz
CD Title: Mr. A - Z
Sounds Like:
Review: This album is a great sophomore follow-up to Jason Mraz's first album. A lot of play with words and "white-boy" rap similair to G-Love resounds throughout the album. 4 stars. Werd.
